Despite being caught, the vendors still shortchanged the elderly man by 20 yuan, leaving the scale at the neighbor’s doorstep before secretly retrieving it early the next morning.
A family member surnamed Wang said, “The two buyers used their own scale and finished weighing all eight bags at 596 jin. Our neighbor heard noise after dinner, came up to question them, and kept stalling until he brought out his own scale to re-weigh. The vendors claimed they were short by 20 yuan, left the scale at our door, and then sneaked it back at 7 a.m. the next day. Today we bought some gifts to thank the neighbor.”
