Philadelphia 76ers’ basketball operations president Daryl Morey’s future with the team remains uncertain, but his draft track record might be his strongest argument for staying. Since taking over in 2020, Morey has selected four first-round picks—Tyrese Maxey, Jaden Springer, Jared McCain, and VJ Edgecombe—with three already proving to be NBA-caliber players. Springer stands as the only one who hasn’t met expectations. Both Maxey and McCain were drafted outside the lottery, a situation similar to the 76ers’ current No. 22 pick this summer. In the second round, Morey found gems like Isaiah Joe and Paul Reed, who are now rotation pieces on contending teams. Adem Bona, the No. 41 pick in 2024, has also outperformed typical expectations for his draft slot.
The team’s depth issues, exposed during the playoffs, won’t be easily solved through free agency or trades in the short term. Paul George has two years left on his contract, while Quentin Grimes, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Andre Drummond are approaching free agency. Morey’s moves in signing and trading have drawn criticism, but his steady draft production offers the most viable path to rebuilding depth.
The problem? Keeping good players around. Joe, Reed, and McCain have all left the organization. Whether this year’s No. 22 pick can become a long-term asset will test Morey’s ability to retain talent.
